Planned Disruption

Traffic management

Here’s what you need to know:

Vicarage Road roundabout construction: We will shortly be starting construction of a new roundabout on Vicarage Road, which will provide access to the development. To complete the roundabout construction, we will need to close a section of Vicarage Road and transfer road users to a temporary route between Straight Mile and Stable Lane, which we have constructed adjacent to the existing carriageway.

Traffic will be switched onto the temporary route overnight on Tuesday 21 October. The temporary road will remain in use until the roundabout construction is complete in July 2026.

Please note, there will be a 30mph speed limit in place on the temporary route for the safety of road users. Clear signage and road markings will be in place to guide road users through the new layout.

Stable Lane Road Closure: As part of the new development, National Grid will be installing a new underground 11kV power cable along Stable Lane. This will involve digging a trench, placing the cable, and then reinstating the road surface once work is complete.

To ensure the safety of residents and our workforce, Stable Lane will be closed from Monday 17 November to Friday 5 December. Access to properties will be maintained and a map of our working area and diversion route can be seen on the interactive map.

We will be installing safety netting across a section of the A5 Watling Street to protect the overhead power cables whilst works are being undertaken on the cables and adjacent pylon towers.

To complete this work safely, we will be installing two-way traffic lights overnight from 8pm to 6am on the dates below. Please note that the backup dates will only take place if the work was not completed the night before.

We will be clearing vegetation and digging small test holes on A5 Watling Street between M6 J12 and Gailey Roundabout from Monday 28 July to Friday 1 August, from 8pm to 6am each night. This is to clear vegetation and dig small test holes. Access to properties will be maintained.

To complete our work safely there will be a single lane temporary traffic light closure in place, with access to properties maintained. Please note the eastbound and westbound laybys on A5 Watling Street will be closed during the day and overnight while the work is ongoing to allow access to working areas.

  • Monday 25 August to Friday 29 August: Vegetation clearance to allow access to working areas.

We’ll soon be removing traffic management measures on the A449 Stafford Road following the completion of two new laybys.

The southbound carriageway will be closed overnight from 8pm Thursday 21 August to 6am Friday 22 August. A fully signed diversion will be in place during the closure.

The northbound carriageway will remain open for traffic, but lane one will be closed.

The new laybys will open for use at a later date, once final safety audits have been completed.
